5XR Track Tip: The Toyo RA-1 tire is a DOT legal race compound tire that comes with a tread pattern that looks a lot like a street tire. This is not ideal for racing, as the tire carcass will squirm around during cornering, which quickly heats the tire up causing your car to lose grip. The art of "shaving" must be performed to utilize these tires to their maximum potential. Shaving a tire is the practice of removing the tread pattern from the surface of the tire, essentially creating a "slick" race tire out of a full tread tire. Since the tread is only for channeling water away, it is not needed in dry weather racing. Shaved tires (slicks) are much faster and have a much better feel than a full tread tire, and most if not all of the Spec Miata's racing are using shaved tires. The shave depth you choose depends on the longevity of the tire, experimentation must be used to determine a balance of how long your tire will last before cording and how long it will keep its grip. Most tires that have too much tread on them will last too long and go through too many heat cycles, causing the tire compound to become harder than desired, essentially losing its grip.
