If you have a road race, time attack, drift, rally, or high powered street vehicle you need an upgraded differential in your driveline. There is nothing worse than spinning the inside wheel of your road race car when you put the power down. Not being able to get traction out of turns will destroy your time attack lap times. And drifting with a stock diff? Forget about it, it won't happen. What a differential is supposed to do is apply the power to the wheel that has the most traction, and what a stock type "open" differential actually does is allow the power to escape to the wheel with the least amount of traction. For instance, if you stop your car with one wheel on the grass and one wheel on the concrete, then try and accelerate fast, the wheel on the grass will spin with an "open" stock diff. With a limited slip diff, the wheel on the grass will not spin any more than the wheel on the concrete, which applies equal power to both wheels and allows you to accelerate faster. Differentials also have an effect under braking, as they keep both wheels spinning at the same speed under a lightened load since the weight is transferred to the front of the vehicle.
