    5X Racing Team

5X Racing Team Story, Info, and Facts

    Early Years

The 5X Racing Team was formed back in 2006 when we got into Spec Miata racing. The concept of creating a race team to put a name behind our hobby quickly turned into a business, which we also named 5X Racing. In February 2006 John and his Father Rick attended the SCCA Double Drivers School at Roebling Road Raceway in Savannah Georgia. After completing the school with flying colors, John and Rick believed Spec Miata racing was the route they wanted to take to restart their racing careers. They ran limited races in the 2006 season, and it was a learning experience for both John and Rick, as John was learning how to pilot a Miata and Rick was learning how to fix a Miata. As the 2006 season came to a close, the plan for the new 5X Racing Team was taking shape. For 2007, Rick decided to join the fun and participate in the same drivers school John had completed a year earlier. This would add another Spec Miata to the 5X Racing Team for 2007 and beyond, and also would require the help of the ladies in both John and Ricks lives, as Johns wife Brittany, and Ricks wife Donna (Johns mother) stepped up to help out with the important things that go on behind the scenes at a race, such as feeding the drivers and booking the rooms at hotels. Now that the 5X Racing Team was a full family involvement, we had a real race team and tons of support from within this small team.

    The Present

John and Rick participated in various local Florida races and focused on the SCCA South Atlantic Road Racing Championship for 2007,2008, and 2009. With solid finishes and strong showings at the SARRC Invitational Championship every year, 5X Racing quickly established itself as a major player in the tough world of Spec Miata. Although we are still very small fish in a big pond, we humbly showed up at races with modest equipment, a strong family bonded team, and smart driving skills to show the big dogs in the sport just what the little dog was capable of! With this, we earned the respect and friendship of many important, honorable players in the Spec Miata world. One of our stong points was focusing on our car setup more than anything else, and with the help of Bob Thornton at Race Engineering we were able to replace our tired 212,000 mile street engine and install some real horsepower in our cars to ensure we were not going to lose a race based on power. With our RE power, John finished the 2007, 2008, and 2009 SCCA SARRC seasons points standing in the top 10-15 for all years participated. The amazing fact is that we only had 5 out of the 6 races needed to count towards a full season, if we were to have the full 6 races who knows where we would have finished! After completion of his 1995 Miata in 2008, Rick raced a couple of times in 2008 and 2009 to maintain his license. In 2010, John accepted the position as NASA Florida Spec Miata Challenge Director to get more involved with building NASA racing in Florida. 2010 brought a new series, championship, and friends to 5X Racing. Racing in the calmer NASA FL Spec Miata Challenge also gave Rick the opportunity to get up to speed in a racecar, which is a totally different world to him compared to the Formula 1 Tunnel Boats he used to race!

    The Future

The future of 5X Racing looks promising. We have worked hard on establishing our race team, our business, and our friends at the track. We constantly strive to win races, have fun, make sure all of our friends are having fun, and to keep it a family oriented activity. In the future we would like to be able to make 5X Racing a full time racing business with car rentals and sponsored drivers, but with any race team we are just taking the necessary steps to work our way up and earn our place in the history books of Spec Miata racing...

Since we started racing Spec Miata, we have met some great people and have expanded our 5X Racing Team to include some fellow racers that have become close friends. We include these friends as part of our 5X Racing Team, as they are always there for us and paddock under the 5X Racing tent at all of our races. Below are some of our Team Members, please feel free to check them out and if you ever want to be part of the 5X Racing Team just make friends with us at a NASA FL race and your in!
