Mazda harmonic dampers are multi-piece assemblies held together with rubber to dampen harmonic vibration generated by the motor. These are well-built parts, but over the course of the years of endless heating and cooling cycles, the rubber hardens and cracks and the damper stops doing its job — and can actually come apart. This is certainly a part that you want to replace when rebuilding a motor for racing or high-performance use.
