    Description

Our Advice: there's nothing quite like a lightweight aluminum flywheel installed in any Miata in our opinion! If you've never driven a Miata with a lightweight flywheel, you are in for a surprise when you do! A lightweight flywheel allows your engine to spin up (and down) the rpm range easier due to reducing the amount of rotating mass your low-powered Miata engine is trying to turn. What this does is make the car feel as if it has more horsepower, without even touching the engine! It's really a treat to drive your Miata after installing a lightweight flywheel, however there are some side effects we would like to prepare you for.

    1. More drivetrain noise. You will hear A LOT more drivetrain noise from your transmission. It's not startling, but can be surprising if you aren't expecting it
    2. "Chattery" clutch engagement. It's no longer as easy to release the clutch without revving the engine as the chattering caused by the clutch friction plate grabbing the friction plate on the flywheel. When you're disengaging the clutch to take off from a stop, you will now have to rev the engine a bit and spin it up more than you normally did with the stock flywheel. We always thought it was kind of cool though, like when you hear a racecar taking off from their pit stop!
    3. More sensitive and accurate clutch pedal work while in stop and go traffic. If you deal with more than the average amount of stop and go traffic on your commute, then a lightweight flywheel may become a bit annoying to you.

All of the above considered, we'd always choose the fun of a lightweight flywheel over the side effects!

Manufacturers Info: Fidanza Aluminum Flywheels are made from the highest quality 6061 T6 aluminum. The material is fantastic for strength, heat dissipation and of course reduction in weight. The friction surface used is an incredibly strong 1045 steel. The flywheel friction plates are milled to meet extremely high specifications. A Fidanza aluminum flywheel can mate with any type of clutch material, including organic, kevlar, ceramic, metallic and sintered iron. The replaceable friction surface is attached with military grade aerospace fasteners. With these replaceable friction plates there is no need to replace the entire flywheel when the clutch or flywheel is at the end of it's life, saving time and money. The ring gears used are also made from 1050 steel and are heat treated for durability. The flywheel ring gears are heated then pressed on and secured with grade 8 button screws. Fidanza was the first to utilize a stepped dowel system in most of our flywheel applications. This doweling method ensures that once the pressure plate is installed the dowels cannot be removed because they become locked into place. No chromoly can compete with the awesome serviceability, strength and superior design of Fidanza's aluminum flywheels. If there was a better material out there, we would be using it.
